Business Environment in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, ADB, 2006

ADB's Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) aims to foster a more integrated regional market, the growth of regional institutions, and an increased capacity for collective action for common, regional public goods. The objectives are to: (i) enhance connectivity; (ii) increase compatitiveness; and (iii) foster greater sense of community among GMS countries. ONe of the eleven flagship programs to achieve the objective is private sector development through enhancing participation and competitiveness (Flagship 7).

The RCSP (2004-2008) for GMS states that while there has been important progress, the private sector (mostly dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises - SMEs) in much of the GMS is still in its infancy. This RETA will assist the Governments on their efforts for private sector development - based on a regional approach to enhance the synergy among the GMS countries.
